Virgin Experience Days - Shark Diving
The Blue Planet Aquarium is the only aquarium in England to offer you the shark diving experience! If you have the nerve for shark diving in these 'tropical' waters now's your chance to do it with Virgin Experience Days.
The Shark Encounter is a PADI recognised 'Discover SCUBA' session where absolute beginners will be taught basic dive techniques by the highly qualified and experienced team.

Included in Virgin Experience Days Shark Diving
- Welcome and safety briefing
- Hire of Scuba equipment and dry suit
- Instruction of how to use the breathing apparatus, how to clear your mask and hand signals
- Demonstration on basic dive techniques
- Chance to encounter a number of amazing sharks and fish such as the Sand Tiger Shark, Lemon Shark and over 1500 various other fish found in the Caribbean including Southern Stingrays
- After your experience there will be time to shower and change
- Certificate of attendance
- Allow approx 3 to 3 hours for the whole experience
- The dive itself lasts approx 30 - 45 minutes

What happens on the day
It's safety first with Virgin Experience Days Shark Diving so upon arrival a member of staff will greet you before attending your introduction and safety briefing.
Then it's time to get fitted with your Scuba equipment and dry suit before taking part in an in water instruction in the training pool, during which you will be taught how to use the breathing apparatus, how to clear your mask and hand signals.
You will then take your first steps into shark-infested waters for your dive with the fully qualified PADI dive instructor. During this shark diving experience you will encounter a number of amazing sharks and fish such as the Sand Tiger Shark, Lemon Shark, Nurse Shark and over 1500 various other fish found in the Caribbean including Southern Stingrays. After your experience there will be time to shower and change before collecting your certificate of attendance.
Need to know about Virgin Experience Days
Shark Diving:
- Minimum age: 16, (Participants under 18 years old need parental/guardian consent, there is no upper age limit).
- Minimum height: 5'
- Maximum height: 6' 4"
- Maximum weight: 18 stone
- Fitness/Medical: Cannot participate if pregnant; You should be confident in the water and reasonably fit; It is also recommended that you do not fly within 8 hours after you dive. The wearing of glasses is not possible, contact lenses are permitted. You will be required to complete a PADI medical form before taking part in the activity; if you answer YES to any of the questions then a GP's authorisation letter will be required. If you have any of the medical conditions listed below you will be unable to dive until the dive instructor receives written authorisation from a doctor: Ear disease; hearing loss or problems with balance; ear infection; history of ear or sinus surgery; suffering from a cold, congestion, sinusitis or bronchitis; history of respiratory problems, severe attack of hay fever or allergies or lung disease; history of chest surgery or a collapsed lung (pneumothorax); history of emphysema; tuberculosis or active asthma; currently taking medication carrying a warning about any impairment of physical or mental abilities; behavioural health, mental or psychological problems, or a nervous system disorder; history of colostomy; history of heart disease or heart attack; heart surgery or blood vessel surgery; history of high blood pressure; angina or taking medication to control blood pressure; 45 years old plus who have a family history of heart attack or stroke; history of bleeding or other blood disorders; history of diabetes; history of seizures; blackouts or fainting; convulsions or epilepsy or taking medications to prevent them; history of back, arm or leg problems following an injury, fracture or surgery; history of fear of closed or open spaces or panic attack (claustrophobia or agoraphobia).
- A 'Declaration of Fitness' form must also be completed on the day of the dive. If you are in doubt, please call our customer service team.
- Disabled toilet facilities and ramp are provided for spectators.
- The experience content, equipment used and restrictions may vary according to venue.
